FY2004 training

With Dr. Hoshi, Professor, Dr. Endo, Associate Professor, Dr. Tanaka, Assistant Researcher

My current medical activity now is concerned with radiation dose reconstruction for population after radiation accidents. Dose reconstruction is necessary to assess medical risk and develop proposals for rehabilitation measures. Dose reconstruction is based on measuring of concentration of stable radiation-induced paramagnetic centers in teeth enamel. The measuring is performed using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy method. We investigated teeth samples extracted by medical appointments at population subjected to risk of irradiation in the territories contaminated by the Chernobyl accident, radioactive accident in South Ural, Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Side etc.

After my HICARE training, I have got experience of using unique modern equipment available in the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine (RIRBM) at Hiroshima University for application at tooth enamel dose reconstruction. I have got possibility to perform measurement of teeth samples collected in the Semipalatinsk area and make some experiments aimed on improvement of the EPR dosimetry method. The obtained results on reconstructed doses will be used for estimation of risk of medical effects of radiation in the Semipalatinsk area. The methodical developments will be applied for further dosimetric investigations in the Semipalatinsk area as well as to population of other regions subjected to risk of irradiation after radiation accidents.

I wish to express my gratitude to the staff of HICARE and RIRBM for providing possibility of my visit to Hiroshima and caring about me during the visit. Especially, they are president of HICARE Hiroo Dohy, staff secretariat member Tokuo Kozono and interpreter Masumi Hasimura. Also, I am grateful to professor Masaharu Hoshi, staff members Aya Mochizuki, Sato Endo, Kenichi Tanaka and others from the Head of International Center for Radiation Information of RIRBM for organizing the visit, kind support and fruitful collaboration.
